IN CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Hazuki Nagisa
Canon: Free! Iwatobi Swim Club/Eternal Summer
OU/AU/OC: OU
Canon Point: Post Eternal Summer (second season)

History: Wiki link, and list of Eternal Summer episode synopses, as it isn't listed on the Free! wiki yet.

Personality:

If Free! has a mascot character, Nagisa would be it. Not just in personality - it's even reflected, though subtly, in the series itself. Nagisa's token animal is the rockhopper penguin, which also happens to be the mascot of Iwatobi High School. It's a clever implication, because without Nagisa, none of Free! would have happened in the first place.

The second youngest member of the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club, Nagisa is always upbeat and brimming with energy. It takes very little to really get him down; when he learns that Haruka has lost his interest in swimming, it saddens him briefly, but in a matter of moments he's back to his cheerful self and joking about making a Hot Springs Club rather than a Swimming Club. He never seems to hesitate to speak his mind, even if what's being said is a little silly, and if he makes a goal for himself, he does everything he can to make sure he can accomplish it.

It's this same straight-forward attitude that brings the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club into existence. Being able to swim with all of them again, especially Haruka, was something Nagisa had wanted to do ever since their old swimming club had shut down. So, with his eyes set on success, he made the transfer to Iwatobi High School in order to reconnect with Haruka and Makoto after several years of broken ties, and proposed the idea of reinstating the swimming club. He did the paperwork, he recruited a teacher to supervise, and he even went as far as harassing talking Rei into joining the swimming club as their fourth member, so that they would have enough members to compete in tournaments. As much as he likes to tease and joke around, he really does work hard to make sure things work out.

Even so, he is still just a teenager. He loves horror movies and thrill rides, he has a huge sweet tooth, and even manages to do well in school. While math isn't his strong suit, he's very good with history. He's even able to correctly guess that Gou is named after the daughter of a Sengoku warlord. He also has a penchant for anything strawberry - strawberry ice cream, strawberry cakes, even the special "rock" and "hopping" bread that he buys for lunch, which has strawberry jam and marmalade inside with chocolate on top. In fact, he seems to be rather enthusiastic about a lot of different kinds of foods. When meeting with Goro, their old swimming club coach, he's seen holding a slice of pizza in each hand, taking a bite from one after the other. At the squid festival, he's seen rather excitedly remarking about all of the different types of squid available, and later on when they go to visit Rei at his house, he insists on buying melon bread to bring as a gift since they can't afford a watermelon. (And when he all but crams a piece into Haruka's mouth and more or less chokes him, he simply sits by and eats his own melon bread while everyone else panics and grabs for a glass of water.) He's also been known to take a bit of free license with other people's food, as seen when he steals a bit of food from Rei's bowl while having sukiyaki at Goro's place.

Teasing comes naturally to him; he's always quick to make some little comment (remarking to Makoto and Haruka that if they arrive early to a date and have to wait, they should tell their date that they've only just arrived) or a silly play on words ("Why do I have to check there?" "Because Rei is for refrige-Rei-tor!"). His most frequent victim of teasing is Gou, where he insists on calling her "Gou-chan" despite her expressed desire to be called "Kou". Even so, no ill feelings ever develop because of it. His teasing is always good-natured, and it stems from a love for his friends, though it's possible that being teased by his sisters as a child has something to do with it as well.

As cheerful and confident as Nagisa is, though, he's still just as vulnerable as anyone. As a child, it was easy to make him cry. As a teenager, he seems to have somewhat grown out of that, though he still has the tendency to get overly emotional from time to time. As easygoing and lighthearted as he is, it's still very possible for him to become stressed, as seen in the episode of Eternal Summer where he runs away from home. His parents were trying to get him to drop out of the Swim Club due to his poor grades, but Nagisa's poor grades are a result of his dislike of studying, which in turn is a result from being forced to study so much in middle school. Rather than approach his parents about it, he ran away from home, but with a little support from his friends, he was convinced to let them know how he really feels. He's also not at all immune to fear, though when Rei slipped out to practice swimming in the ocean and got caught in a storm, he seemed to handle himself fairly well. Rather than stand by and cry like his younger self would have done, he ran in after Rei, coming to his rescue and bringing him to safety on one of the nearby islands.

Strengths: Friendly, outgoing, caring, innocent, upbeat, energetic. Mentally, he is incredibly intelligent when it comes to things like history. Physically, he is in very good shape, being a swimmer.

Weaknesses: Emotional, tends to focus more on the needs of others than his own needs. He hesitates to trouble his friends with his own problems. Mentally, he dislikes math, and studying tends to stress him out due to being forced to study so hard in middle school, so he just ends up not doing much of it. Physically, he is smaller than the rest of his team, only coming up to around their shoulders. His diet also tends to mostly consist of junky foods, especially strawberry-flavored things. He does not like peppers or onions.

Possessions: N/A
Pony/Animal Type: Pegasus
Cutie Mark: A penguin holding a strawberry.
Pony Picture: Something like this! Except with Nagisa's hair. The maker didn't have a mane that looked close to it, so this was the best I could do.
SAMPLES
First Person:

[The scroll opens up to a wide, somewhat surprised pair of bright magenta eyes on a very strawberry-pink pegasus. Nagisa blinks, lifting a hoof to prod at the thing once or twice, before apparently becoming satisfied with it.]

Okay! I guess this thing is working, sooo~

Has anyone-- [Wait.] Ehh, has anypony managed to swim with wings like this?

[His wings flap out behind him.]

I mean, I'm having a lot of fun flying! It's great! But I don't want to get out of practice swimming, either, and this sort of thing just kind of seems like it'd get in the way! Anypony have any ideas? Maybe we could wear full-body suits?

Oh! And while I'm at it, is the bakery here any good? There's this cake I saw there today that had a ton of strawberries on it and I really want to try it!

Third Person:

Learning to fly was an interesting process.

To begin with, it seemed like it should be easy. Flap your wings, and liftoff! Right? Apparently not. For a good ten minutes, Nagisa tried various ways of achieving flight, ranging from simply flapping to running in circles and hopping while doing it. He probably looked ridiculous, but he didn't really mind! Everypony started out like this, right? So it wasn't too embarrassing or anything.

After failing to become airborne by hopping, his next thought was to find something higher. Maybe he wasn't getting enough air under his wings! And if he could glide, that sounded pretty fun in it's own right. Up on a fence he'd climbed - albeit awkwardly, without fingers and thumbs to grip with - and he stood on a fencepost with determination. Just think of it like diving into the pool at home! Easy as that. Glancing behind himself to watch his wings, he began to flap, slow at first but gradually faster and stronger, until he could feel a good breeze coming from them. Perfect.

"Okay. Ready to go!"

Looking back ahead, he very nearly reached up out of habit to pull swim goggles down over his eyes. But that obviously wasn't necessary here. Ducking into a crouch, he let his wings beat a time or two more, then jumped.

And his hooves didn't touch the ground. But his wings sure did carry him forward by several feet and right into a nearby hay bale. Nonetheless, it did nothing to dampen Nagisa's enthusiasm, if the excited laughter coming from the center of it was any indication. Hey, a success was a success!
