Canon: Free!
Character: Hazuki Nagisa
Timeline: End of season 1
Personality:
If Free! has a mascot character, Nagisa would be it. Not just in personality - it's even reflected, though subtly, in the series itself. Nagisa's token animal is the rockhopper penguin, which also happens to be the mascot of Iwatobi High School. It's a clever implication, because without Nagisa, none of Free! would have happened in the first place.
The youngest member of the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club, Nagisa is always upbeat and brimming with energy. It takes very little to really get him down; when he learns that Haruka has lost his interest in swimming, it saddens him briefly, but in a matter of moments he's back to his cheerful self and joking about making a Hot Springs Club rather than a Swimming Club. He never seems to hesitate to speak his mind, even if what's being said is a little silly, and if he makes a goal for himself, he does everything he can to make sure he can accomplish it.
It's this same straight-forward attitude that brings the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club into existence. Being able to swim with all of them again, especially Haruka, was something Nagisa had wanted to do ever since their old swimming club had shut down. So, with his eyes set on success, he made the transfer to Iwatobi High School in order to reconnect with Haruka and Makoto after several years of broken ties, and proposed the idea of reinstating the swimming club. He did the paperwork, he recruited a teacher to supervise, and he even went as far asharassing talking Rei into joining the swimming club as their fourth member, so that they would have enough members to compete in tournaments. As much as he likes to tease and joke around, he really does work hard to make sure things work out.
Even so, he is still just a teenager. He loves horror movies and thrill rides, he has a huge sweet tooth, and even manages to do well in school. While math isn't his strong suit, he's very good with history. He's even able to correctly guess that Gou is named after the daughter of a Sengoku warlord. He also has a penchant for anything strawberry - strawberry ice cream, strawberry cakes, even the special "rock" and "hopping" bread that he eats for lunch, which has strawberry jam and marmalade inside with chocolate on top. In fact, he seems to be rather enthusiastic about a lot of different kinds of foods. When meeting with Goro, their old swimming club coach, he's seen holding a slice of pizza in each hand, taking a bite from one after the other. At the squid festival, he's seen rather excitedly remarking about all of the different types of squid available, and later on when they go to visit Rei at his house, he insists on buying melon bread to bring as a gift since they can't afford a watermelon. (And when he all but crams a piece into Haruka's mouth and more or less chokes him, he simply sits by and eats his own melon bread while everyone else panics and grabs for a glass of water.) He's also been known to take a bit of free license with other people's food, as seen when he steals a bit of food from Rei's bowl while having sukiyaki at Goro's place.
Teasing comes naturally to him; he's always quick to make some little comment (remarking to Makoto and Haruka that if they arrive early to a date and have to wait, they should tell their date that they've only just arrived) or a silly play on words ("Why do I have to check there?" "Because Rei is for refrige-Rei-tor!"). His most frequent victim of teasing is Gou, where he insists on calling her "Gou-chan" despite her expressed desire to be called "Kou". Even so, no ill feelings ever develop because of it. His teasing is always good-natured, and it stems from a love for his friends, though it's possible that being teased by his sisters as a child has something to do with it as well.
As cheerful and confident as Nagisa is, though, he's still just as vulnerable as anyone. As a child, it was easy to make him cry. As a teenager, he seems to have somewhat grown out of that, though he still has the tendency to get overly emotional from time to time. He's also not at all immune to fear, though when Rei slipped out to practice swimming in the ocean and got caught in a storm, he seemed to handle himself fairly well. Rather than stand by and cry like his younger self would have done, he ran in after Rei, coming to his rescue and bringing him to safety on one of the nearby islands.
Background:
Wiki link here! Clicking on each link in the "Plot" subsection and then clicking on the "Plot" tab will open up a summary for that episode. But, since nothing here mentions what happens in the light novel prequel (High☆Speed!), I'll expand on that.
Nagisa grew up in a household with his father and three elder sisters, all of which were presumably in middle or high school based on the one glimpse we get. As the youngest child - and the only boy - in the family, his sisters would tease him to the point of tears, often dressing him in girls' clothing and/or putting makeup on him. On his first day as a member of the Iwatobi Swimming Club in elementary school, his sisters even went as far as replacing his swimsuit for a girl's. Luckily for him, Haruka offered to let Nagisa wear his swimsuit, and he wore the girl's suit instead.
Needless to say, Nagisa quickly took a liking to Haruka, as stoic as he was. When Haruka started running to swim practice every day, Nagisa was quick to ask if he could come along, even though the younger boy couldn't really keep up. After several failed attempts, though, Haruka eventually began to slow his pace so that Nagisa could keep up, which went to show that even cold, distant Haruka could take a liking to the energetic boy.
When Rin joined the Iwatobi Swimming Club, Nagisa was quick to notice that he was good at swimming. Really, really good. He attempted to get some critique on his butterfly stroke from Rin, who responded a bit harshly at first, but rather quickly gave in when his words nearly drove the boy to tears. Despite the critiques, Nagisa ended up taking a break on practicing butterfly, opting to take up the breaststroke instead. He tried to get Rin to let him swim breaststroke in the relay with them, and at first Rin strongly denied the request. But after Nagisa's repeated show of self-confidence, Rin decided to allow him on their team under the condition that he could make the top time in the fifth-year time trials. Nagisa won, was allowed to join the team, and eventually went on with Haruka, Makoto and Rin to win the medley relay race.
Haruka, Makoto and Rin attended a different elementary school than Nagisa, so the swimming club was the only place they really ever saw each other. Shortly after the relay, the swimming club shut down, and Nagisa and the others fell out of touch.
Abilities/Additional Notes: Nagisa is very much your average high school student, so he doesn't have any sort of superpowers or abilities. Being on the swim team, though, he is in very good shape, so his endurance and stamina are likely much higher than a normal person's.
First-Person Sample:
[When the feed first turns on, it's set to audio. There's nothing but silence for a moment, but the sound of the PCD being turned over and over in someone's hand follows soon after. Which is followed by more silence, but only for a couple of seconds.]
Ah? Cell phone? ... someone must have lost it. Hmm...
[There's another moment of obvious shuffling noises, and the sound of a couple of keys being pressed. And then, all at once, the feed switches to video. And what shows on the screen is a very obviously surprised teenage face.]
Ah! A camera!
[Whoops. He... probably shouldn't be messing with someone else's cell phone, now that he thinks about it. But, after a moment of trying to figure out how to disable the camera mode, he simply gives up with a sigh. The PCD gets set down on a somewhat flat surface, showing a view of the sky and nearby buildings reaching up to it.
It's still recording, though. Not that Nagisa has noticed.]
Haru-chaaan! Mako-chaaan! Rei-chaaan!
[A pause for a moment. And then, another sigh.]
... haah, what is this place? So creepy...
Third-Person Sample:
Nagisa was a fan of horror movies. Nagisa liked the thrills and surprises, the twists and turns that the plots sometimes took. But Nagisa was not a fan of being dropped right into one.
At least, that's how it felt to him. Maybe not even a horror movie at all - maybe more like an apocalypse movie, which was just about as good. Sometimes they had zombies. And Nagisa found himself really, really hoping that this place didn't have zombies, because it sure looked like it should. And wherever he happened to be at the moment, he definitely didn't need there to be zombies.
At first, he'd tried pinching himself. Maybe this was a dream. Maybe the strawberry ice cream he'd eaten after dinner had been bad. Maybe he was getting sick and having fever dreams. But the pinch had been painful and all too real, so that quickly shot down that idea. It only left one option, and that was that, somehow, he'd been dragged into some weird other world. Just like in that one American movie he'd seen once... what was it called? Army of something? If that was the case, then, maybe he was some sort of hero! ... but the likelihood of that actually being the case was very slim, and he knew it.
Nagisa dropped down into a squat on the ground, hands moving up to thread his fingers through his hair as he let out a semi-frustrated sigh. Okay, think... what should he do? This place didn't look all that safe, so maybe finding a way to defend himself just in case something went wrong would be a smart thing to do. Something like a baseball bat, maybe, or a rusty pipe, or a chainsaw. At this point, he'd take anything.
... the hand-sized chunk of rubble next to him would have to do for now.
The next thing he needed to do was figure out if there was anyone else here. Maybe Haru had been pulled here, too, or Makoto, or Rei. But figuring out exactly where they were, if they were here at all, was the problem. When you get lost, you're supposed to stay in one place until someone finds you, but if no one knew he was here in the first place...
"... well, staying in one place isn't doing any good." Nagisa stood, brushing off the legs of his pants with his free hand. If he was going to find anyone, the only way to do it was to look. And, even if it didn't do a whole lot to make him feel any safer... at least he had a rock.
